Mattress Size - Getting it Right

While other home purchases get more attention due to their flashier nature (new leather sofa, anyone?), mattresses deserve a share of our research and investment considering their impact on our quality of life. Studies show we spend one-third of our lives in bed, and the quality of that sleep time impacts our physical and mental health. Think of the last time you had disrupted sleep and how that affected your day. Now think of a morning you awoke refreshed and ready to tackle whatever comes your way. We shoot for the latter if at all possible. And for most of us, it’s very possible.

Size Matters

There is no doubt that a mattress’s firmness and its design as one for side, back, or stomach sleepers plays an important role in the mattress that is right for any individual. Not to be overlooked, however, is its size. Too small and we find ourselves in cramped positions, bumping into our partner, even falling off the bed. Too large and it’s hard to transport and get through doorways, and diminishes open space in our bedroom.

Choosing the Right Length, Width, and Thickness

Let’s start with the “cheat sheet” below, with facts and tips to help identify the best option for each sleeper. Ideally, a mattress will be 6” longer than the person sleeping on it, and partners can rest both hands behind their heads, elbows sprawled, without bumping into each other.

Sizes

Twin - 38.5”W x 74.5”L -  smallest mattress available outside of crib; ideal for children and teens under 5’9”

Twin XL - 38.5”W x 79.5”L - good for a single person in a tight space who desires a longer length

Full - 53.5”W x 74.5”L - option for single teen/adult under 5’9”

Queen - 59.5”W x 79.5”L - most popular size; for guest rooms, smaller master bedrooms, couples who prefer close quarters, single “sprawlers”

King - 75.5”W x 79.5”L - for couples, including those with children, and pets that join them in bed

California King - 71.5”W x 83.5”L - narrower than King but longer; requires special bedding

Thickness

Most manufacturers offer five options - low profile (2-5”), slim (5-8”), standard (8-12”), deep, thick, or tall (12-16”), extra deep, extra thick, or extra tall (16+”).  The most critical factor when determining thickness is body weight - heavier people need more cushioning and support. If a sleeper is over 230 pounds, for example, they should opt for a mattress greater than 12” thick.

Reflect on your current mattress when choosing your next one

Sometimes the best solution is to identify what isn’t working now.  Do your feet hang off the bottom of the mattress or are they comfortably supported? Do you and your partner regularly bump into each other in bed? Does your bedroom accommodate your mattress well or would a smaller/larger one better fit the space?

A final tip: take into account any “nighttime visitors” (kids, pets) you expect on a given night, and allow for the extra space needed to shift positions comfortably when these “guests” arrive. With these factors in mind, you are well on your way to finding the mattress that is best for you.  Sweet Dreams!
